Six weeks to go: get ready for life after exams

The countdown might be on but it’s not just the end of classes and exams that’s in sight. The summer brings the start of a new chapter for many students but you don’t have to wait till then to get ready. Start thinking about your next move now.

Whether you’re a first year planning to travel or get a summer job; a second year after industry experience or a finalist ready to embark on the rest of your life post university, making preparations is essential if you want to make the most of your time and get where you want to be.

Over the next six weeks, it’s worth taking action on your goals. Think about what you want to do and what you need to get there. Do you want to travel? Earn money? Do something new, exciting, challenging? Undertake an internship? There might be steps you need to take now. Organising a work placement might involve making contacts, developing relationships and negotiating arrangements; you might have financial considerations or have to sort out accommodation. Travel might mean organising visas or finding a part time job to fund it, which in turn could involve writing a CV and preparing for interviews.

Whatever it is you want to do, whether it’s a short term goal or a longer term aim, getting started now will help you when its time to start moving forward. Studying and getting the exam results you’re after might be your main priority - spending your spare time thinking about your future and getting ahead is definitely worth having high on your priority list.
