It might be Fair, but is it Legal?
Yes, its
the Sheffield Legal Fair on Wednesday 20 November. Whether you’re already
studying law, intending to convert, or just curious, it’s a great way to find
out first-hand about the opportunities in the sector and what potential
employers are looking for.

OK, so it might be Legal, but is
it fair?
A good
question. The professions of solicitor and barrister are highly prestigious and
very competitive, and in the past may have seemed the preserve of privileged,
privately-educated, well-off, mainly middle-class, mainly male and mainly white
entrants. Does this still hold true? The legal professions are doing a lot to open
up access to a more diverse workforce. Initiatives like the Law Society’s Diversity Access Scheme, Allen & Overy’s Smart
Start scheme, and the Citizenship Foundation’s Lawyers in
Schools programme are helping to redress the balance.
The
Transition Team at the Careers Service aim to provide additional careers
support to students from backgrounds “traditionally under-represented in higher
education” - that could be mature students, anyone who’s the first generation
in their family to go to university, students from schools or neighbourhoods
with low rates of progression to university, students on full living cost
grants. We’re keen to work with any students who consider themselves to be
“non-traditional” and are aiming for a law career, whether you’re already
