Basically
the answer is - get settled into uni, have fun, fit in some time for academic
work, and don’t worry too much about your career at this stage.

But some
of you may have part-time jobs on your mind - especially if you’re from a less
well-off background and need money to support yourself through University. The
Careers Service’s Transitions project provides careers support for UK
undergraduates from non-traditional backgrounds (such as first generation to go
to uni; students receiving full grants; mature students; local / commuter
students). One area we like to help with is finding part-time jobs.
The
Student Jobshop (part of the Careers Service) and Sheffield Volunteering (part
of the Students Union) run a Part-Time
Jobs and Volunteering Fair on Wednesday
9 October, 11.00 – 3.00 in the Octagon. Find out about the types of work

For UK
undergraduates from non-traditional backgrounds, the Transitions team, Rachel
and Pete, will be running a two-hour workshop on Getting a Part-Time Job, on Monday
7 October, 4.00 – 6.00, to help you get ready for the Fair. We’ll look at CVs and application forms, how
to approach employers, and what to tell them about yourself. To be sure of a place, book here (or you can just turn up on the day, at the 301 Student Skills Centre, 301 Glossop Road, room B1, subject to available places).
Also for non-traditional background students, Pete and Rachel will be offering one-to-one CV
reviews in the Student Jobshop, on Tuesday 8 October, 11.00 – 3.00. For your 20-minute appointment, book here. Or call in at the Student Jobshop on the day to check if there are free time slots.
Open to
all students is a talk on CVs for Part-Time Jobs, on Thursday 3 October,
1.00 – 2.00, at Hicks Building, Lecture Theatre 5; no need to book, just turn up.
And all
students can access part-time vacancies and other work experience opportunities
by using myVacancies (http://shef.prospects.ac.uk/) and/or calling in at the
Student Jobshop in the Union (open Monday – Friday 11.00 – 3.00; Tuesdays from
11.00).
Of
course for most students, part-time jobs are mainly about helping the money go
further. At Careers, we think that’s all well and good, but the real value is
in getting some work experience on your CV, developing skills like teamwork,
customer service and time management, and starting you off on a employability journey
that might later include placements or internships and finally a graduate
career. Any student can book an appointment with a careers adviser to discuss
their work experience and career ideas, by ringing 0114 2220910 or calling in
at the Careers Service. For non-traditional background students, if you prefer, you can
